  • Description

GENERAL MAXIME WEYGAND WAS BURIED IN PARIS TODAY (TUESDAY). MORE THAN 5,000 PEOPLE STOOD OUTSIDE THE ST. PHILIP DU ROULE CHURCH LISTENING TO THE FUNERAL SPEECHES. THERE WERE A FEW BOOS AS HIS CAREER WAS RECALLED IN THE ORATIONS. POLICE UNITS STOOD BY IN CASE OF ANY DISTURBANCES FOLLOWING THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT REFUSAL TO ALLOW THE GENERAL A TRADITIONAL MILITARY FUNERAL AT LES INVALIDES, THE FRENCH MILITARY SHRINE.

TWO SQUADRONS OF THE GENERAL'S OWN REGIMENT, THE NINTH HUSSARS, MARCHED PAST THE COFFIN WITH BAND AND COLOURS. THE CROWD SHOUTED POLITICAL SLOGANS LIKE "DEATH TO DE GAULLES" AND SOME SCUFFLING BROKE OUT. SERIOUS INCIDENTS WERE PREVENTED BY THE POLICE. MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIE FRANCAIS, LAWYERS AND ARMY OFFICERS PAID THEIR RESPECTS.

FRENCH COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF AT THE TIME OF THE 1918 ARMISTICE, GENERAL WEYGAND DIED AT HIS PARIS HOME LAST WEEK AT THE AGE OF 98. HE HAD A FALL FROM WHICH HE FAILED TO RECOVER.

HE WAS RECALLED FROM RETIREMENT AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR AGAIN AS C-IN-C. AS SUCH HE SIGNED THE ARMISTICE WITH THE GERMANS, BUT LATER WAS ARRESTED AND DEPORTED TO GERMANY. AFTER THE WAR HE WENT ON TRIAL FOR HIS COLLABORATIONIST ACTIVITIES, BUT WAS CLEARED. EVER SINCE, GENERAL WEYGAND HAS BEEN IN DISFAVOUR WITH GENERAL DE GAULLE.
