Several hundred Uganda Asians, who've been living in a camp near Vienna since being expelled by General Amin last year, are having to confront snow for the first time. As usual, the children have been enjoying the experience, but for the adults it was one more worry to add to their troubles.
Although the Asians say they are being well cared for, their biggest problem now seems to be a lack of purpose. We have no work and no money of their own. In addition, most have had their families split up all over the world, and don't know when they will be re-united.
For the Asians in Austria, language is a problem too...English is the only Western tongue they know, and most still hope to be allowed into Britain, Canada or the United States.
SYNOPSIS: These men are Asians form Uganda.. refugees living in a camp near Vienna after being expelled by General Amin last year. They've never seen snow before, and most never expected to see any. Now, although it helps them make a little pocket money, it's really just another problem to add to the many they already have. The United Nations refugee commission put three hundred Asians in this camp, and nearly two thousand more in similar camps all over Europe.
However, while the adults face problems, the children find the snow a great novelty; They're still excited by their new world.
But for the men, life is not an exciting..they're cold and tired...tired of being refugees....tired of being out of work. The two and a half million dollars donated by sympathetic governments when they were expelled is almost gone...and though more will undoubtedly be raised, the men would much rather earn it themselves. English is the only western language they know, and they hope to be allowed into Britain, Canada or the United States to establish homes and earn their own money.
