  • Description

Two of the most important horse races in Brazilian racing calender were run in Rio de Janeiro, the capital, on Sunday (7 August).

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of racegoers, not only from Brazil but also from neighbouring countries thronged Rio's Hippodrome for the event. It was organised by the Jockey Club of Brazil and attracted entries from Argentina and Ecuador, as well as the host country. The horses taking part were brought out of the paddocks to be paraded for the benefit of spectators before the serious business of racing got underway.

The field of horses lined up for the start of the President of the Republic Grand Prix race, which was run over a course of 1,600 metres. Some spectators were armed with binoculars to give them a close view of the proceedings. All eyes were on local jockey. P. Cardoso, or Tonka. Despite some uneasy moments in the early stages of the race, he gave a brilliant display of riding. Spectators watched his progress with keen interest.

Tonka want on to win the race, and owner was delighted.

The President of the Republic Grand Prix served as a prelude to the biggest attraction of the day-the Grand Prix of Brazil. This race was run over a course of 2,400 metres-800 metres longer than the previous race.

Until halfway through the race, it appeared that any one of the runners could win. Punters who had put their money on local favourite Daleo, ridden by Brazilian Edson Farreira, began to wonder if they were on the losing side. But suddenly, Daiao emerged from almost nowhere, established a commanding lead and went to win the race quite comfortably. The joy on Ferreira's face was obvious as he waved to the cheering crowd and led his mount to the paddock.
