THE JAGUAR, WHICH WAS EVOLVED FROM THE FRENCH BREGUET AVIATION BR 121 PROJECT, WAS DESIGNED BY BREGUET AND THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION TO MEET A COMMON REQUIREMENT OF THE FRENCH AND BRITISH AIR FORCES LAID DOWN EARLY IN 1965. THIS REQUIREMENT CALLED FOR A DUAL-ROLE AIRCRAFT, TO BE USED AS AN ADVANCED TRAINER AND TACTICAL SUPPORT AIRCRAFT OF LIGHT WEIGHT BUT HIGH PERFORMANCE, TO ENTER SERVICE IN THE EARLY 1970S.

THE JAGUAR SHOWN TO NEWSMEN TODAY WAS THE FIFTH PROTOTYPE OF THE FRENCH SINGLE SEAT-NAVAL TACTICAL VERSION -- TEH M.05. FOUR OTHER VERSIONS ARE BEING BUILT, THE A (FRENCH SINGLE-SEAT TACTICAL SUPPORT AIRCRAFT), THE B (BRITISH TWO-SEAT TRAINING VERSION), THE E (FRENCH TWO-SEAT TRAINING VERSION), AND TEH S (BRITISH SINGLE-SEAT TACTICAL SUPPORT AIRCRAFT).

UNDER THE TERMS OF A PRODUCTION AGREEMENT SIGNED BY THE BRITISH AND FRENCH DEFENCE MINISTER ON 9 JANUARY 1968, AN INITIAL SERIES OF 400 JAGUARS IS BEING BUILT, 200 FOR EACH COUNTRY. DELIVERIES OF PRODUCTION JAGUARS TO THE ARMEE DE L'AIR (FRENCH ARMY FORCE) ARE SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN EARLY 1971, FOLLOWED BY DELIVERIES TO THE BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE IN 1972.

THE M 05 FRENCH NAVAL VERSION,WHICH MAY BE LAUNCHED BY CATAPULT, IS PART OF PHASE 2 OF THE PROGRAMME,WHICH INCLUDES THE PRODUCTION OF TOW PROTOTYPES OF THE BRITISH STRIKE VERSION, THE S.06 AND THE S.07. THE S.06 WAS SHOWN AT WARTON, IN ENGLAND, LAST MONTH.

THE JAGUARS ARE DESIGNED TO HAVE A MAXIMUM LEVEL SPEED AT SEA LEVEL OF 840 MILES AN HOUR (1,350 KILOMETRES AN HOUR) AND TO FLY AT MORE THAN 1,120 MILES AN HOUR (1,800 KILOMETRES AN HOUR) AT ABOVE 36,000 FEET (11,000 METRES).

THE M VERSION HAS TWO 30 MM ADEN CANNON ON ITS ARMAMENT AND PROVISION FOR WING TIP ATTACHMENT FOR AIR-TO-AIR MISSILES.
