  • Description

INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA HAVE FORMALLY ENDED THE UNDECLARED WAR THEY HAVE BEEN FIGHTING SINCE 1963. A PEACE TREATY NORMALISING RELATIONS BETWEEN THE COUNTRIES WAS SIGNED IN DJAKARTA, THE INDONESIAN CAPITAL, ON THURSDAY (11TH AUGUST) BY THE MALAYSIAN DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, TUN ABDUL RAZAK, AND THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. ADAM MALIK.

INDONESIA CALLED THE UNDECLARED WAR "CONFRONTATION." IT WAS LAUNCHED IN JANUARY, 1963, BY PRESIDENT SOEKARNO, WHO CLAIMED THE FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA WAS A NEO-COLONIALIST STRUCTURE THAT HAD TO BE CRUSHED. MOVES TO END CONFRONTATION CAME AFTER PRESIDENT SOEKARNO HANDED OVER EXECUTIVE POWERS TO THE MILITARY FOLLOWING THE UNSUCCESSFUL PRO-COMMUNIST COUP. THE INDONESIAN ARMY STRONGMAN, GENERAL SUHARTO, THEN SAID CONFRONTATION WAS RUINING INDONESIA ECONOMICALLY.

UNDER THE PEACE PACT, INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA HAVE AGREED TO END HOSTILITIES AND ESTABLISH DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS IMMEDIATELY. THE FIGHTING WAS MAINLY A BITTER CAMPAIGN IN THE JUNGLES OF BORNEO; AND IN KUALA LUMPUR YESTERDAY (FRIDAY), MR. MALIK SAID INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA WERE TO CONSIDER JOINT PATROLS OF THE BORNEO BORDER AREAS, REGARDED AS THE HOME OF ABOUT 700-MALAYSIAN COMMUNIST GUERRILLAS. MR. MALIK IS IN KUALA LUMPUR ON A 24-HOUR VISIT TO CEMENT THE PEACE AGREEMENT.
