SYNOPSIS: Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania has been the scene of a flurry of activity recently with Presidential summit talks between Zambia, Zaire and Tanzania.

Tanzania President Julius Nyerere was at the airport on Monday to bid farewell to President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia. There was a traditional Tanzanian tribute to the departing leader, who'd been attending the summit talks at nearby Arusha. The talks were held in the north of the country as President Nyerere had been resting there on doctors' orders. President Kaunda flew back to Zambia after spending less than 24 hours in Tanzania. The talks had also involved Zaire's President Mobutu Sase Seko.

Two scheduled sets of formal talks were called off after President Kaunda left unexpectedly early. He did take part in several hours of discussion.

The following day the airport was again bustling for the departure -- this time, according to timetable -- of President Mobutu.

Official sources refused to comment on the outcome of the talks. No communique was issued, and newsmen were told that details of the talks would not be made public. T???nian ministers even declined to ???ment on reports about the sub???s under discussion.

These reports had indicated the three Presidents discussed the Zambia-Rhodesia border situation, as well as guerrilla movements in the white-ruled African countries.

The only official announcement was that the leaders had discussed matters of mutual interest in a cordial and brotherly atmosphe ???. Tanzania and Zaire are important to Zambia as they can provide routes to the Atlantic Ocean away from Rhodesia.
