FOURTEEN-THOUSAND RACING ENTHUSIASTS FLOCKED TO DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, FEB 11, TO SEE INTERNATIONAL STARS COMPETE IN AMERICA'S FIRST DAYTONA CONTINENTAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RACE - A THREE-HOUR ENDURANCE CONTEST FOR SPORTS AND GRAND TOURING CARS.

THE GRAND TOURING CLASS, WITH NINE POINTS TOWARDS THE WORLD MANUFACTURERS CHAMPIONSHIP DUE TO THE WINTER, PROVIDED A CLASH BETWEEN THE BRITISH JAGUAR XKE AND THE ITALIAN FERRARI BERLINETTA.AT THE WHEEL FOR FERRARI WAS STIRLING MOSS OF GREAT BRITAIN (NO 18), AND PETER BERRY, ALSO OF GREAT BRITAIN, WAS DRIVING FOR JAGUARS.

FIFTY-THREE CARS LINED UP ON THE STARTING GRID FOR THE LE MANS STYLE START.THE DRIVERS SPRINTED FOR THEIR CARS AND THEY WERE AWAY.THE FIRST THREE LAPS SAW SOME JOCKEYING FOR POSITION BEFORE PHIL HILL IN A NEW FERRARI TOOK THE LEAD, FOLLOWED BY RODRIGUEZ OF MEXICO IN ANOTHER FERRARI AND DAN GURNEY (NO 96) IN A LOTUS.A FERRARI WAS AN EARLY CASUALTY WHEN IT SPUN OFF THE TRACK WITH SMOKE POURING FROM ITS TAIL, BUT THE DRIVER ESCAPED UNHURT.FOR SEVENTEEN LAPS HILL CLUNG TO HIS LEAD, BUT IN THE TWENTY-FIRST LAP HE WAS PASSED BY GURNEY.MEANWHILE, IN THE GRAND TOURING CLASS, THE JAGUAR XKE WAS FORCED INTO THE PITS, LEAVING STIRLING MOSS IN THE FERRARI THE CLASS LEADER AND THOSE NINE CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS AS GOOD AS WON.

BUT THE EXCITEMENT WAS NOT OVER.TWO HOURS AND FIFTY-EIGHT MINUTES AFTER THE START OF THE THREE-HOUR RACE, THE ENGINE FAILED ON GURNEY'S LOTUS AND HIS CAR COASTED TO A STOP WITHIN TEN FEET OF THE LINE.WITH NEARLY 82 LAPS COMPLETED AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 104.101 MPH, GURNEY KNEW HE HAD THREE MINUTES IN HAND OVER HIS NEAREST RIVAL.HOWEVER, HAD HE CROSSED THE LINE BEFORE THE END OF THE RACE, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN FORCED TO COMPLETE ANOTHER LAP TO WIN.SO, AS THE LAST SECONDS OF THE RACE TICKED AWAY, GURNEY STOOD BESIDE HIS CRIPPLED CAR WHILE OTHERS RACED BY.FINALLY THE CHEQUERED FLAG FELL AND GURNEY, CLIMBING BACK INTO THE COCKPIT, COAXED THE LOTUS OVER THE LINE WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE CAR'S STARTER.

AFTER A HURRIED CONFERENCE OF RACE OFFICIALS, AN OBJECTION TO GURNEY'S METHOD OF FINISHING WAS OVER-RULED AND HE WAS NAMED THE WINNER.WINNER OF THE GRAND TOURING CLASS WAS STIRLING MOSS, AND BOTH MEN RECEIVED A SUITABLE REWARD FOR THEIR EFFORTS FROM THE REIGNING 'MISS UNIVERSE'.
