  • Description

The exiled Roman Catholic Primate of Hungary, Cardinal Mindszenty, who spent eight years in jail and fourteen years confinement in the United States Embassy there, celebrated mass in Belgium's Sacred Heart Basilica in "Brussels on Sunday (August 27). The service, attended by thousands of Hungarian exiles with girls in Hungarian national costume singing in the choir and collecting alms from the congregation, was held to mark the thousandth anniversary of the birth of St. Stephen -- first King of Hungary. His birth date is put at somewhere between 969 and 975 A.D., and celebrations have been held annually in various countries since 1969 and will continue until 1975.

The Cardinal, aged 80, lives in exile in Austria. He was imprisoned for eight years by the Hungarian authorities after the Second World War; released during the 1956 uprising there; and sought refuge in the U.S. Embassy when the revolt failed -- remaining a virtual prisoner until 1971, when he agreed to leave the country and give up his ministry. He stayed shortly in the Vatican, and moved to Vienna where he settled down to write his memoirs.

Cardinal Mindszenty was in Belgium on a four-day visit described as strictly unofficial and non-political.
