The favourite General Eanes has said that if he becomes President he will appoint Dr. Mario Sores, Secretary General of the Socialist Party, as Prime Minister. The socialists won the largest slice of the bote in the general elections i April but with only 107 seats in the assembly they lack an overall majority at the moment.

Background: In Portugal the final stage in the country's move towards parliamentary democracy has begun with the four candidates' campaigns for the presidential elections on June 27 well underway.

SYNOPSIS: The firm favourite is army chief of staff General Antonio Ramalno Eanes. Portugal's three strongest parties - the Socialists, the Centre Popular Democrats and the Conservative Centre Democrats - are all backing him. The walls of Lisbon probably carry more Eanes posters than those for the other candidates and survey last week showed that he would win more votes than his three opponents put together. That indicates that General Eanes could win outright on the first vote. The General has a reputation for efficiency gained after he put down last November's military uprising in Lisbon.

General Eanes' main rival appears to be Prime Minister Jose Pinheiro de Azevedo. Admiral Azevedo, who has said he is only standing to stop the elections becoming a one horse race, is relying on his forceful personality and greater political experience to upset predictions.

The third candidate Major Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho, was named as the figurehead of the November uprising. He was demoted from General, stripped of his commands and briefly jailed but the army high command has allowed him to stand and according to the polls he has so far attracted more of the left wing vote than the last candidate Senhor Octavio Patoia veteran underground fighter of the Communist party against the old right-wing dictatorship. Whoever is elected will appoint a prime minister and dissolve the present provisional coalition of Socialist, Popular Democrats, Communists, Independents and military.
