  • Description

The domestic breeding of eland -- for their medicinal milk and rapid weight-gaining quality - is being successful carried out at Nduimet farm, on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Northern Tanzania.

A herd of eight eland, all captured young, have been reared alongside cattle to accustom them to domestic life. The experiment has shown that eland, a wild, bovine-type antelope, will put on about 50 per cent more weight over a given period and on the same area of land as a cow.

In addition, the cholesterine found in eland milk has been discovered to be valuable in the treatment of heart diseases. The eland, one of the shyest of all wild animals, domesticates very quickly and can soon be hand-fed. They mix freely with cattle as do some wildebeest -- a relation of the gnu -- which are also grazed with cattle at the farm.
