  • Description

The United Nations Conference on the Environment opens in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday (5 June). The conference will not open without some problems. The Soviet Union and some of her East European allies are boycotting the conference because the East Germans have been refused full participation. East Germany is not a member of the United Nations.

The only Communist countries among the 78 developing and 30 industrialised nations to have announced their participation are Yugoslavia, Rumania, and the People's Republic of China.

The aim of the U.N. conference is to study the long-term implications of what man is doing to his environment. The conference will be called on to approve broad principles for safeguarding the environment.

The United Nations Conference will be greeted with much opposition from youthful protesters. Counter-conferences are planned, with one already in session. The Dai Dong conference is composed of an international group of scientists who feel that the U.N. conference isn't getting enough scientific information. The group plans to issue an alternative declaration to that of the U.N. conference.

Developing countries will be more concerned with how any agreements may inhibit their future development.
