  • Description

In Mauritania, the Mali Foreign Minister, Monsieur Alioune Bloddin Beye, met Mauritanian President, Colonel Moustapha Ould Salek on Sunday (10 September) to conclude the first round of preliminary talks aimed at settling the dispute over the Western Sahara.

SYNOPSIS: President Salek came to power in July in a bloodless coup that toppled President Moktar Ould Daddah. The new president offered then to seek an end to Mauritania's war against Polisario guerrillas, who are trying to set up an independent republic in Western Sahara.

Mali are seeking to mediate on the issue. Monsieur Beye had held earlier talks with leaders in Algeria, which backs Polisario, and Morocco, which has a joint defence pact with Mauritania. Before the pact, Mauritanian-Moroccan relations were poor, and latest reports say these relations have recently come under increasing strain. Late in August, King Hassan of Morocco warned them not to allow Polisario to set up a mini-state in Tiris El-Gharbia, the Mauritanian sector of the former Spanish Sahara. While there has been no official Mauritanian reaction, to the King's remarks, spokesman said the ruling Military Committee of National Correction (CMRN) was 'furious'. Observers say King Hassan has been alarmed at the committee's course since it took power.
