  • Description

WHEN LAND IS SCARCE, WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT - HOUSES OR A ROAD? THAT WAS THE PROBLEM FACING THE PLANNERS AT CHARLESTON IN WEST VIRGINIA, USA. AMERICA IS THE GREATEST OF THE CAR-OWNING DEMOCRACIES, SO IT IS NOT SURPRISING THAT THE ROAD WON.

THE PROBLEM REMAINED ... WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH THE HOUSES? THEY WERE ALREADY BUILT, AND IT WAS DECIDED THAT THEY MUST BE MOVED TO MAKE WAY FOR AN EXTENSION TO A FOUR-LANE "EXPRESSWAY". IT WAS A PITY TO PULL THEM DOWN, AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO TOW THEM THROUGH THE TOWN BECAUSE OF THE NARROW STREETS AND BRIDGES.

SO THEY HAD TO GO BY RIVER - DOORS, ROOMS, AND ALL. ONCE UPROOTED FROM THEIR BIRTHPLACE, THEY ARE DRAGGED TO THE WATER'S EDGE. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TOWN, THEY ARE UNLOADED FROM THE BARGE AND HAULED TO THEIR NEW SITE.

SEVERAL DOZEN HOMES WILL BE MOVED IN THIS WAY BEFORE THE JOB IS DONE. IT IS A HEAVY TASK ... EACH HOUSE WEIGHS ABOUT 40 TONS!
