Background: Temperatures in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, have been the highest for eleven years. The thermometer was registering 40.5 degrees Centigrade (104.9 Fahrenheit) on Christmas Eve.

People abandoned their Christmas hopping and headed to the beach to cool off in the sea. But even the beach had its drawbacks--at one resort a carnival parade had to be cancelled because the sand was too hot to march on. Lemonade bottles exploded in some stores because of the heat, and throughout Australia fire fighters were busy dealing with hundreds of outbreaks ranging from minor fires to huge blazes which devastated miles of bushland.

SYNOPSIS: Santa Claus was the only person wearing a coat in the streets of Sydney, Australia at Christmas. Shoppers were sweltering in the highest temperatures for eleven years.

The thermometer reached nearly a hundred and five degrees Fahrenheit at one time--making it a little difficult for people to concentrate on thoughts of traditional turkey and steaming Christmas pudding. With news coming in of bushfires breaking out, and overheated lemonade bottles exploding in the stores, many people abandoned shopping and headed to the seaside.

But even at the edge of the ocean there was no escape from the searing heat. One beach carnival had to be abandoned because the sands were too hot to march on. Still, there was always the water itself. It seemed some people intended celebrating Christmas sitting in the sea--but later the wind changed, and the temperature dropped to a more comfortable level.
