Background: The age-old symbol of human civilisation, the plough, has brought men from 20 countries to County Wexford in Ireland to compete in the World Ploughing Contest.
The two-day competition, which began on Friday (5th October), will decide who will take home the Golden Plough, the trophy awarded to the world champion ploughman. Willi Flatnitzer of Austria was champion last year.
The inclusion of a two-man team from Rhodesia sparked off a controversy before the competition began, and led to the boycott by the Irish Prime Minister, Mr. Liam Cosgrave, and his Ministers.
The competition is divided into two major sections - the stubble ploughing, which was held on Friday (October 5th), and the Grassland Ploughing, the following day.

Heave rain on Friday made the going heavy for those competing in the stubble ploughing section. The Grassland ploughing section was held the following day.
The coveted award of the contest is the Golden Plough which will be presented to the world champion.
Irishmen have won the world title on the only two occasions the championships have been held there and they are hoping that it will be a case of third time lucky.
