  • Description

A MINING SHAFT AT SOUTH AFRICA'S RANDFONTEIN ESTATES GOLD MINE, CLOSED SINCE 1948, IS AGAIN YIELDING GOLD BEARING ORE, BUT THIS TIME IT IS ORE BEING MINED 15 MILES AWAY AT WESTERN AREA GOLD MINE.

THE ORE IS LOADED BY CONVEYOR ON TO TEN 25-TON DIESEL-ENGINED ROAD VEHICLES AND TRANSPORTED FROM WESTERN AREAS IN WHAT IS CLAIMED TO BE THE BIGGEST ROAD SHUTTLE SERVICE OF GOLD BEARING ORE YET TO TAKE PLACE IN WITWATERSRAND'S HISTORY.

AT RANDFONTEIN THE TRUCK BODIES ARE TIPPED BY MEANS OF HYDRAULIC LIFTS, AND THE VALUABLE CARGO POURS INTO A 600-FOOT DEEP ORE BIN, MADE BY SEALING OFF THE OLD STUBBS SHAFT. LOADING TAKES FOUR MINUTES AND UNLOADING IS COMPLETED WITHIN ONLY FOUR OR FIVE MINUTES.

TWO SIX-TON SKIPS DROP DOWN AN INCLINED SHAFT AND STOP UNDERNEATH THE GATE TO THE ORE BIN. WHEN LOADED THEY ARE HAULED TO THE SURFACE BY AN OPERATOR TO BE EMPTIED INTO ANOTHER GREAT BIN. THEN, FINALLY, THE GOLD BEARING ORE IS LOADED INTO MINE RAIL TRUCKS FOR HAULAGE TO THE RANDFONTEIN ESTATES REDUCTION PLANT.

THIS WHOLE SYSTEM WAS PLANNED IN ORDER TO SAVE THE ERECTION OF A REDUCTION PLANT AT WESTERN AREAS AS THE PLANT AT RANDFONTEIN IS WELL ABLE TO ASSIMILATE THE MATERIAL FROM THE DISTANT MINE.
