  • Description

A 65-foot diameter parachute unfolds 25 miles above the New Mexico desert in a Nasa test to simulate landing instruments on Mars. The July 28 experiment began several hours earlier when a giant balloon was released from the ground to carry a container housing the parachute and cameras to the testing area where the environment is close to the rarefied atmosphere of Mars. This film is now being carefully studied by engineers at the space agency who are trying to select the best parachute design for soft landing their delicate scientific instruments on the planet in the 1970's.
