  • Description

Retired army General Tomas Caballero, president of the state-owned Argentina railways, announced at a press conference on Wednesday (29/6) that it would use 120 million dollars to be provided by the Eximbank of Japan, to modernize the Argentina railway system. The head of the Japanese Eximbank, Satoshi Sumita, told Argentina government officials on Tuesday (28/6) that it is still holding at its disposal the balance of a credit for a total of 172 million dollars originally granted in 1971. Only part of the loan was used at the time. The balance will be used for the purchase of rolling stock and the electrifying of urban and suburban railway lines, by far one of the most used means of transport in Argentina. Argentine economy ministry officials -who last year reported the state-owned railways were losing money at the rate of two million dollars a day-- said the ministry is prepared to give utmost priority to the project.
