  • Description

In Uganda, Kampala's chief magistrate has adjourned the trial of Bob Astles, the British-borne aide to the ousted dictator Idi Amin, following the State Prosecutor's withdrawal of four of the six robbery charges against him. No reason has been given for the withdrawal of the charges, but magistrate James Okuku accepted the Prosecutor's plea for more time on Tuesday (25 September) and remained Major Astles in custody until October the twelfth when a new trial will be held. Major Astles also faces charges of murder and armed robbery, but no date has been fixed yet for further trials.

SYNOPSIS: Bob Astles had to appear at Kampala's Magistrates Court on Monday (24 September) to face six charges of theft which carry a maximum total of 43 years in prison.

Four of the charges were dropped on Tuesday (25 September). But Major Astles is also accused of heading Idi Amin's anti-corruption faces trial in the Ugandan High Court on charges of murder and armed robbery which carry the death sentence.

The Ugandan authorities have been working for months on a system to try the thousands of former Amin aides and officials presently in custody. Special courts are to be set up to try those accused of capital offences--some five hundred thousand people are believed to have been killed during Amin's eight-year rule.
