  • Description

DAIRY FARMERS IN FRANCE SET UP ROADBLOCKS AND DISTRIBUTED FREE MILK TO MOTORISTS AND TOWNSPEOPLE TODAY IN A PROTEST OVER THE GOVERNMENT'S AGRICULTURAL POLICY. THEY WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO INCREASE MILK AND BEEF PRICES AND TO RELAX REGISTRATIONS IMPOSED ON THE FARMERS CREDIT UNION.

IN AMIENS, IN NORTHERN FRANCE, THE FARMERS STOPPED TRAFFIC ON THE MAIN ROAD TO PARIS, HANDING MOTORISTS LEAFLETS OUTLINING THEIR COMPLAINTS. EACH MOTORISTS RECEIVED SEVERAL CARTONS OF MILK, AN APOLOGY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

THE PROTEST WAS ORGANISED BY "LA FEDERATION DES SYNDICATS D'EXPLOITANTS AGRICOLES" (F.N.S.E.A.), THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF FARMERS UNION. THEY CLAIM THAT FARMERS WILL BEAR THE BRUNT OF THE DEVALUATION OF THE FRANC EARLIER THIS YEAR, AND THAT THE SAME THING HAPPENED IN THE 1958 DEVALUATION. THE ORGANISATION SAYS THAT PRICES OF FRENCH AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE SHOULD BE READJUSTED TO MATCH THE 12-AND-A-HALF PER CENT DEVALUATION.
