  • Description

This coverage is of the relief efforts of the USS DUBUQUE (LPD-) to provide food, water, and limited medical supplies to South Vietnamese refugees aboard the SS AMERICAN CHALLENGER, SS GREENPORT, SS PIONEER CONTENDER, and the USNS SGT ANDREW MILLER.

Nine cargo ships and several small vessels of the Navy's Military Sealift Command (MMSC) have evacuated more than 10,000 Vietnamese refugees from South Vietnamese coastal cities since March 27.

Additionally, during the evacuation operations, U. S. Navy ships provided support in the form of food, fuel, water, medical and security personnel to the civilian manned transports carrying refugees. Using landing craft and other small boats, the USS DUBUQUE transferred over 52 tons of supplies to the ships. Teams of doctors and hospital corpsmen, working around-the-clock, treated the seriously ill and injured.

As of this date, MSC and USN ships are remaining in the area.
