  • Description

In Spain, police have been investigating the killing by urban guerrillas of Supreme Court Judge Miguel Cruz Cuenca. His death was the latest in a series of political assassinations this year which have threatened the country's new democracy.

SYNOPSIS: Judge Cruz Cuenca was shot down by two youths outside his home in central Madrid. The guerrilla group GRAPO, which had been inactive for months, has claimed responsibility for his killing.

Recently Spain's Interior Minister, Rodolfo Marin Villa, said the Basque separatist organisation ETA was the only guerrilla group still active in the country. ETA has carried out six of the seven political killings so far this year. GRAPO's reappearance poses another threat to the general elections scheduled for March the first.

Increasing criticism from the right wing and escalating violence are jeopardising the efforts of Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez to lead Spain peacefully towards the elections. The guerrillas are believed to want to provoke the armed forces into intervening against the new democracy. There would then follow, according to their policy, a popular uprising leading to the establishment of an independent Marxist state.

In recent years GRAPO has been responsible for a number of incidents including the kidnapping of a top general and the killing of Spain's director of prisons.
