Background: THE TURKISH PARLIAMENT VOTED IN ANKARA TONIGHT (FRIDAY) FOR A PROPOSAL THAT WILL GIVE THE GOVERNMENT POWER TO SEND TROOPS INTO GREECE IF THERE ARE ANY MORE INCIDENTS IN CYPRUS. THIS FOLLOWS TWO DAYS OF HEAVY FIGHTING BETWEEN GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS AT TWO VILLAGES SOUTH OF NICOSIA. THE FIGHTING ENDED LAST NIGHT WHEN THE GREEK-CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT ORDERED A CEASEFIRE.

THE FIGHTING BROKE OUT AT THE VILLAGE OF KOPHINOU AND AYIOS THEODOROS. BOTH VILLAGES ARE DIVIDED INTO GREEK AND TURKISH SECTORS. SO FAR, NO ACCURATE OFFICIAL FIGURES OF THE CASUALTIES HAVE BEEN ISSUED. THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE ON THE ISLAND HAS MADE A STRONG PROTEST TO THE GREEK-CYPRIOT NATIONAL GUARD COMMAND ABOUT THE GUARD'S FORCIBLE DISARMING OF U.N. TROOPS DURING THE FIGHTING AND ESTABLISHING FIRING LINES NEAR U.N. OBSERVATION POSTS.

EARLIER TODAY, THE TURKISH PRIME MINISTER, MR SULEYMAN DEMIREL, TOLD A CABINET MEETING THAT HE WANTED WIDER POWERS TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION BECAUSE ANY FIGHTING THAT STARTED IN CYPRUS COULD NOT BE LIMITED ONLY TO THE ISLAND. "IT WILL SPREAD TO FIGHTS WITH GREECE TOO", HE SAID. MR DEMIREL'S PROPOSAL WAS ADOPTED BY BOTH HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT.
