  • Description

A shipment of heavy earthmoving equipment from America arrived at the Port of Abidjan on Monday (August 3) for use on the Koussou Dam project in the Bandama River Valley.

The equipment brought to the Ivory Coast on board the "African Comet" was the first of several American shipments due to arrive in Abidjan this month. The cargo, included the latest model tractors, crawlers, fork-lifts and other heavier equipment, and was estimated to be worth 5 1/2 million dollars (2 1/4 million sterling).

The massive Kossou Dam project in the Bandama Valley is part of a hydro-electric power scheme, but will also provide irrigation water to increase local yields of rice, and make available additional navigable waterways which will be stocked with fish. The equipment will also be used to clear surrounding land for new settlements.

The Master of the "African Comet". Captain Adrian Schodle, met Mr Aoussou Koffi....President of the Koussou Dam Project..... on the Abidjan quay on Monday evening. Together with the American Ambassador, Mr. Root, the President of the American Club, Mr Gieske, and other Ivory Coast officials he was shown some of the equipment which had been offloaded during the day.

Finance for the project has come from the Export-Import and Bankers' Trust Company (of New York) Banks. The whole project is likely to cost the Ivory Coast 36 1/2 million dollars (15 million sterling)
