  • Description

ABOUT 3,000 STUDENTS SURROUNDED THE INDONESIAN PARLIAMENT HOUSE IN DJAKARTA FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS ON MONDAY, DEMANDING FREE ELECTIONS. THEY ALSO DEMANDED AN END TO A DECREE PROCLAIMING DR. SUKARNO PRESIDENT FOR LIFE.

THE SINGING, CHANTING STUDENTS ENCIRCLED THE BUILDING AT THE CLOSE OF AN OPENING FULL SESSION OF PARLIAMENT, WHICH WAS HOLDING ITS FIRST MEETING SINCE LAST OCTOBER'S ABORTIVE COMMUNIST COUP ATTEMPT. STUDENT LEADERS WERE ALLOWED THROUGH A HEAVY CORDON OF TROOPS AND POLICE TO CONFER WITH SENIOR MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE. THEY WERE TOLD BY MR. SAICHU THAT HE AGREED IN PRINCIPLE WITH THEIR DEMAND FOR FREE ELECTIONS FOR A NEW REPRESENTATIVE PARLIAMENT.

AMONG OTHER PROPOSED MEASURES RAISED BY THE STUDENTS WERE THE DISMISSAL FROM PARLIAMENT OF MR. ASMARA HADI, CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMUNIST-SUPPORTING INDONESIAN PARTY, AND MR. SUBAMIA, A DEPUTY SPEAKER.

THE STUDENTS MOVED ON PARLIAMENT IN A CONVOY OF LORRIES. THEY CARRIED INDONESIAN FLAGS AND PLACARDS READING 'DISMISS PARLIAMENT' AND 'LONG LIVE THE ARMED FORCES OF THE INDONESIAN REPUBLIC'.
