    After living under asylum for months in the Canadian embassy in Santiago, the Chilean capital, one-hundred-and-seventy-three refugees from Chile arrived in Canada at dawn Saturday (January 12).

    A Canadian forces' 'plane flow the refugees to Toronto. It was the first major airlift of Chileans to Canada since the Government of President Salvador Allende was overthrown in last year's September Coup.

    The Canadian Immigration Department said more than 2,000 people wishing to leave Chile -- including some 300 non-Chileans -- has applied for entry visas to Canada. The Department said about 250 had been granted, and the rest were being considered.

    Hundreds of refugees have also been given shelter in the French and Argentinean embassies in Santiago.
