    EIGHTEEN COUNTRIES ARE TAKING PART IN A CONFERENCE WHICH OPENED TODAY (FRIDAY), IN LONDON, AIMED AT REACHING AGREEMENT ON A COMMON COLOUR TELEVISION SYSTEM FOR EUROPE. THE HUNDRED DELEGATES AND EXPERTS WILL BE CONSIDERING THREE ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS - AMERICAN, FRENCH AND GERMAN. THEY WILL HAVE THE RESULTS OF EXPENSIVE TESTS CARRIED OUT IN BRITAIN, FRANCE, HOLLAND, ITALY, SWITZERLAND AND WEST GERMANY.

    THE CONFERENCE IS ARRANGED BY THE INTERNATIONAL CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE ON TELE-COMMUNICATIONS. THE EUROPEAN BROADCASTING UNION AND THE INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING AND TELEVISION ORGANISATION ARE REPRESENTED, AS WELL AS INDIVIDUAL BROADCASTING AUTHORITIES.

    THE CHOICE OF A COMMON COLOUR SYSTEM FOR EUROPE, WOULD ALSO INFLUENCE THE CHOICE MADE BY AFRICAN AND ASIAN COUNTRIES BORDERING THE MEDITERRANEAN. OLDEST OF THE THREE SYSTEMS - THE AMERICAN N.T.S.C. - IS ALREADY IN USE IN THE UNITED STATES, JAPAN AND BRAZIL. IT HAS BEEN ADAPTED TO THE EUROPEAN 625-LINE STANDARD. P.A.L. - A VARIANT OF N.T.S.C. - HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN GERMANY. THE THIRD - SECAM - HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN FRANCE. THE CONFERENCE WILL LAST FOR ELEVEN DAYS.

    (YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THE WEST GERMAN INFORMATION MINISTER WATCHED A DEMONSTRATION OF THE SECAM SYSTEM IN PARIS).
