  • Description

A heavy loss for the Canadian town of Port Colborne,Southern Ontario. The Maple Leaf Milling Company, largest flour mill in the British Commonwealth was destroyed Oct 7 by fire. The damage is estimated at ten million dollars.

Eight people were taken to hospital with severe burns, and although all are expected to recover, the condition of several is described as critical. The executive vice-president of the milling company says the plant will be rebuilt. However, its loss may throw scores of men out of work. An attempt will be made to use as many of the employees as possible in the reconstruction programme.

Cause of the fire is not yet known. There was an explosion immediately before the flames broken out, believed caused by an accumulation of grain dust. It appeared to centre on the third floor of the plant.

About fifty people were in the building at the time, but the eight injured were all on the fourth floor.

Firemen from several communities joined in the fight to save adjacent properties. The Ontario Bag Company, a subsidiary firm was also destroyed.

During the night a fireboat from Buffalo, New York had helped to fight the fire, but in the morning Oct 8 was recalled to base across the Lake. Local firemen complained that they had no way of reaching the flames on the burning pier.
