  • Description

TURKISH WAR VETERANS WEARING UNIFORMS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR TURNED OUT YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) AT ARIBURNU BEACH, ON THE GALLIPOLI PENINSULA, TO GREET 50 OF THE ORIGINAL ANZACS ON A PILGRIMAGE TO THE BEACH -- BETTER KNOWN AS ANZAC COVE. IT WAS HERE, 50 YEARS AGO, THAT THOUSANDS OF AUSTRALIANS AND NEW ZEALANDERS SCRAMBLED ASHORE THROUGH A HAIL OF TURKISH BULLETS TO ESTABLISH A BEACHHEAD ON THE PENINSULA.

THE 50 ANZACS, WHO WERE AMONG THE ORIGINAL LANDING PARTY, CAME ASHORE AT DAWN IN SMALL BOATS FROM THE TURKISH LINER, KARADENIZ. FROM THE LINER THE LANDING CEREMONY WAS WATCHED BY THE REST OF THE PILGRIMAGE GROUP OF 250 AUSTRALIANS AND 77 NEW ZEALANDERS.

THE ARRIVAL OF THE 50 BEMEDALLED VETERANS, SOME OF WHOM WERE ACCOMPANIED BY MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILIES, CLIMAXED FOUR DAYS OF EMOTIONAL CELEBRATIONS IN ISTANBUL. THE ANZACS HAVE RECEIVED TUMULTUOUS WELCOMING FROM THE TURKS.

AFTER THE WARM GREETING FROM THEIR FORMER ENEMIES, THE 50 ANZACS VISITED AN AUSTRALIAN WAR CEMETERY ON THE GALLIPOLI PENINSULA, WHERE A SHORT SERVICE WAS HELD. SOME 30,000 MEN WERE KILLED IN THE GALLIPOLI CAMPAIGN. THE AGES OF THE VISITING SURVIVORS RANGED FROM 69 TO 78.
