  • Description

The United States government has chartered an excursion boat, the Skipper K, and is using it to bring Cubans from Matanzas in Cuba to Key West, Florida. Ninety-four Cubans arrived in the Skippers K Sunday evening. It was understood that the excursion vessel was being used temporarily until plans for an airlift could be completed.

The 85-foot Skipper K arrived off Key West after the run from Matanzas escorted by a large U.S. Coast Guard cutter. A 76-year-old woman with crutches was the first off. Among others arriving was a former officer in the pre-revolution Cuban army. He said he wanted to go back to Cuba and fight against Fidel Castro but could no do it alone. His daughter came with him. Her husband had been denied permission to leave Cuba because he is of military age.

The trip was the second for the Skipper K. Late Saturday night, it brought in 108 Cubans.

Most of the Cubans arriving in Florida have joined friends and relatives already living in southern Florida. Others have joined Cuban colonies in other parts of the United States, principally New York.
