  • Description

French Foreign Minister Jean Sauvagnargues told a news conference in Beirut on Monday (21 October) that the more moderate the Palestinian guerrillas made their demands at the United Nations, the more France would support them.

    M. Sauvagnargues was speaking to newsmen after an historic one-and-three-quarter-hour breakfast meeting with Palestine Liberation Organisation leader Yasser Arafat.

It was the first such meeting between Mr. Arafat and a western Foreign Minister.

Diplomatic sources said that M. Sauvagnargues told the P.L.O. leaders that France was concerned about the territorial integrity of Lebanon, and would measure its support for the commandos to the extent that their raids inside Israel did not compromise Lebanese sovereignty.

After the private meeting, M. Sauvagnargues told newsmen "the Palestine problem must be taken into consideration.....from now on it will be one of the fundamental considerations in the search for Middle East peace."
