  • Description

Fire in a storehouse in Beirut on Saturday night (19 April) caused damage estimated at 12 million Lebanese pounds (2 1/2 million pounds sterling).

The storehouse, on the Beirut waterfront, contained highly inflammable materials such as plastics, paper, oil and cigarettes.

Firemen said a short-circuit in a transformer had caused the fire, which spread rapidly throughout the building.

The fire has severely restricted the use of one of the only three docks in Beirut harbour, a port which handles about 85 to 90 per cent of Lebanon's trade. Most goods imported to Lebanon are unloaded there for transport inland by truck.

Port authorities are worried that the reduced capacity of the port might cause a temporary bottle-neck of ships in the harbour and o goods awaiting loading.
