  • Description

MORE THAN 1,000 STUDENTS BEGAN HOLDING PROTEST MEETINGS AND BOYCOTTING LECTURES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA IN KUALA LUMPUR YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). THEY WERE PROTESTING POLICE ACTION IN TEAR-GASSING 500 STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS ON THE CAMPUS.

THE STUDENTS COMPLAIN THAT THE FORCEFUL POLICE ACTION INFRINGED THEIR RIGHT OF FREE EXPRESSION ON THE CAMPUS.

BUT HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER DR ISMAIL SAID POLICE WERE SENT IN TO PROTECT 100 DELEGATES FROM 12 COUNTRIES ATTENDING AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOUTHEAST ASIAN DRAMA AND MUSIC.

STUDENTS CARRIED BANNERS CALLING FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND, THOUGH ROWDY, WERE GENERALLY WELL BEHAVED.

THE UNIVERSITY'S VICE-CHANCELLOR, PROFESSOR UNKU AZIZ, TOLD THEM THAT A FULL AND COMPLETE STATEMENT OF HIS VIEWS ON THE PROTESTS WOULD BE ISSUED LATER.

(RIOT POLICE WERE SENT TO THE CAMPUS ON THURSDAY TO BREAK UP A STUDENT DEMONSTRATION CALLING FOR THE OUSTER OF PREMIER TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME ANYONE COULD REMEMBER RIOT POLICE BREAKING UP A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION ON THE CAMPUS.)
