  • Description

INTRODUCTION British Foreign Secretary David Owen announced on Wednesday (13 April) that he'll visit Rhodesia this weekend for further talks with Prime Minister Ian Smith and other black white leaders.

SYNOPSIS: Dr Owen spent more than three hours with South African Prime Minister John Vorster in Capetown on Wednesday before meeting Mr Smith there also. Dr Owen and Mr Vorster discussed new Anglo-American proposals aimed at reviving negotiations to take Rhodesia to black majority rule next year. Mr Vorster said later that given goodwill and cooperation on all sides, there was a chance that a solution to the Rhodesia problem could be found. But he added that South Africa had no role to play for the moment, saying it was a domestic issue for the Rhodesians, black and white, and between Rhodesia and Britain.

Dr Owen then held talks with Mr Smith, leader of the breakaway British colony. No news coverage was allowed of these discussions but afterwards Dr Owen seemed satisfied that room existed for achieving a settlement as be explained to reporters.
