  • Description

Decorated tanks massed with cheering flag waving demonstrators rumbled through Taksim Square Ankara Turkey June 8 in a popular rally to acclaim the revolutionary military government of General Cemal Gursel.

Thousand packed the bed flagged square as high-ranking officers took the salute as the decorated tanks and jeeps drove past and jet planes flashed overhead after a formal wreath-laying ceremony.

Later that day Gen. Gursel accompanied by members of his Provisional Government and of the National Union Committee went to Ankara's Stadium to see a Turkey-Scotland soccer game.

The Committee with 20 military members including the General, pledged to control Turkey until the next general election, approved that day Turkey's provisional constitution aimed at stamping out present laws considered undemocratic. The text of the revised Constitution, due for publication June 9, was now reportedly to be published, after its initialling by the General next week.
