  • Description

Israel's Premier Ben-Gurion said his farewells to Cabinet Ministers, Knesset members, diplomatic representatives and senior officers at Lydda airport, near Tel Aviv, Mar 7, before boarding a plane bound for the United States.

A veil of security measures shrouded his departure and, although he openly took leave of the Israel Cabinet, most details of his visit to the States and Britain were carefully withheld. Little more is known officially than that he is to accept an honorary degree of doctor of Law from Brandeis University, near Boston, and that he will be received by Prime Minister Macmillan in London, Mar 17.

Despite an Israeli government statement to the effect that specific meetings with political figures would be announced only after final arrangements had been made, it is understood that Mr Ben-Gurion will have pre-Summit talks with President Eisenhower, Mr Herter and Mr Hammarskjoeld.

Representatives of ten Arab countries called on Mr Herter at the State Department in Washington, Mar 7, to warn him that Ben-Gurion's visit to America might damage US-Arab relations.
