    THE RALLY CELEBRATED THAT DAY - NOW CALLED KENYATTA DAY.

    THE PRESIDENT WAS WELCOMED BY TEAMS OF TRADITIONAL DANCERS SWINGING TO THE RHYTHM OF DRUM BEATS AND BY CHOIRS SINGING PRAISE OF THEIR LEADER.

    AFTER WATCHING THE DANCING FOR 15 MINUTES, PRESIDENT KENYATTA RECALLED IN A SPEECH - IN SWAHILI - THE DAY HE WAS ARRESTED IN 1952.

    HE WENT ON TO OFFER AN AMNESTY FOR THE "SHIFTA" - SOMALI FREEDOM FIGHTERS IN KENYA'S NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT - IF THEY GAVE THEMSELVES UP TO KENYAN SECURITY FORCES WITHIN THE NEXT MONTH.

    THIS, SAID PRESIDENT KENYATTA, WAS TO SHOW GOOD FAITH TO THE SOMALI PEOPLE BEFORE THE TALKS HE WAS LEADING IN ARUSHA NEXT WEEKEND TO ATTEMPT TO SETTLE THE LONG DISPUTE BETWEEN KENYA AND SOMALIA.

    AFTER THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH, THE KENYAN MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC PLANNING, MR. TOM M'BOYA, LED A ROUND OF SINGING WITH THE VAST CROWD JOINING IN.
