  • Description

Britain's Queen Elizabeth is in Australia. She arrived in Canberra - Australia's national capital - on Wednesday (17th October) to begin a tour of six days. On Saturday (20th October) she was to open Sydney's new Opera House.

The Queen flew in to the Fairbairn Air Force Base from Fiji. She was greeted by the Governor General, Sir Paul Hasluck, and the Prime Minister Mr. Whitlam. Also waiting on the tarmac was her husband - Prince Phillip - who'd arrived in Canberra several days earlier. After a brief chat to some of the people who'd waited at the Air Base to see her, the Queen went to Government House.

While the Queen met members of the Australian Government in Canberra, Sydney was being transformed for her arrival. Side streets were blocked off to traffic and strewn with pots of flowers, bunting was draped over the city's modern office blocks, and grimy suburban trains had a face-lift.

SYNOPSIS: Britain's Queen Elizabeth is in Australia. She arrived in Canberra - Australia's national capital - on Wednesday. Waiting to greet her were the Governor General, Sir Paul Hasluck, the Prime Minister Mr. Whitlam and Prince Philip.

Hundreds of people were waiting at the Fairbairn Air Force Base to greet the Queen. Her Husband, Prince Phillip, had arrived in Canberra several days earlier. She'd spent a day in Fiji to break the long flight from London, and prepare for a hectic six-days of engagements.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, was meeting the Queen for the second time this year. He visited England in April shortly after his election as he country's first Labour Party leader for more than twenty years.

The patient crowds had an unexpected bonus - breaking away from the formal proceedings, the Queen repeated her famous "walkabout", and spent several minutes chatting with enthusiastic antipodeans.

The most important part of the visit was yet to come - the Queen was to open the controversial Sydney Opera House on Saturday. She was to perform the opening ceremony in anew capacity - as, the Queen of Australia - a new title which took effect following legislation by the new government.
