The Secretary General of the Islamic Secretariat, Mr. Hassan-al-Tohamy, who arrived in Thailand on Thursday?
The Secretary General of the Islamic Secretariat, Mr. Hassan-al-Tohamy, who arrived in Thailand on Thursday (27 June), went to Government House in Bangkok on Friday morning (28 June) to meet the Thai Prime Minister, Mr. Sanya Dharmasakti.
Oh his arrival, Mr. Tohamy spoke about trouble in the south of Thailand, where Government troops have been moved in on what are described as "suppression operations" against so-called "armed bandits". Mr. Tohamy said he believed the trouble had been caused by a small misunderstanding between Thailand and Malaysia, and it could be easily overcome by cooperation.
During the recent Islamic Conference in Kuala Lumpur, there had been on discussion about the separatist problem in Thailand because delegates did not see any problem. Mr. Tohamy said he wanted to promote friendship and cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia in accordance with the policy of the Islamic Conference.
During his visit to Thailand Mr. Tohamy will be making a three-day tour of the southern provinces. He hopes to encourage the muslims living there to cooperate with the Government in its efforts to solve the problems in the south.
The Islamic Conference had decided to ask Muslim minorities in many countries throughout the World to cooperate with their Governments.
Recent reports from the south claim that the situation has "greatly improved". Suppression operations have been carried out in the districts of Raman, Saiburi, Mayor and Ruso. Ten of the bandits, for whom arrest warrants had been issued, have been killed in battles, and five others had been captured.
