  • Description

The Queen, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, visited Rabaul on the island of New Britain on Saturday (23rd February) on the second day of their tour of Papua New Guinea.

The Queen was greeted by the District Commissioner Mr. Phillip Bouraga and by the Minister for Justice Mr. John Kaputin - a native of New Britain.

At Queen Elizabeth Park Her Majest watched a display of native dancing and singing. The high point in the Sing Sing was the dance performed by masked men which related the story of a raiding party attacking a loval village and the villagers successful repulsion of the invaders.

Speaking in reply to an address of welcome given by Mr. Kaputin the Queen said, "We are greatly enjoying our visit to Papua New Guinea, meeting the people and seeing something of the exciting developments which are going on in the country. I am sure that the detremination you all show to succeed will be rewarded; you have my very best wishes for the future."
The Queen and Royal Family left Rabaul on Sunday for Goroka, in the Eastern Highlands on mainland Papua New Guinea.
