    The Southern region of NATO's allied command was established officially i Naples when Admiral Robert Carney raised the American flag on board the USS Mount Olympus in Naples harbour in 1951.

    SYNOPSIS: The 25th anniversary of NATO's Southern region was celebrated a ta ceremony in Naples on Saturday (16 October) in the presence of NATO secretary-general Joseph Luns. Italian Defence Minister Vito Lattanzio and Admiral Stansfield Turner, US naval commander in chief of AFSOUTH, the southern region of NATO's allied command.

    In a speech during the ceremony, Admiral Turner thanked the people of the city of Naples for having given them hospitality during the 25 years.

    AFSOUTH is the largest of NATO's three regions, stretching form Gibraltar to eastern Turkey and form the northern Italian border to the shores of North Africa. Forces form Turkey, Italy, Greece, the United Kingdom and the United States are based at AFSOUTH headquarters in Naples.

    While NATO secretary-general Joseph Luns spoke to those assembled o the Naples harbour front, NATO's senior military commander, British Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Peter Hill-Norton told a ceremony in Rome that the Indian Ocean and the South Atlantic presented dangerous and potentially disastrous problems for NATO.
