  • Description

President El Nimetry of Sudan last weekend travelled by train from Khartoum, the capital, to Kassala where he addressed a large rally on Monday (1 January) marking the country's 17th Independence Anniversary. At the mass rally the President, who had with him as an official guest Tanzanian Vice-President About Jumbe, told his vast audience that African freedom fighters were being trained in the Sudan. Members of the African liberation movements, he said, were undergoing military training. He revealed no further details of the training but referred to Sudan's Egyptian neighbours as "the symbol of resistance in the violent battlefront," with whom Sudan "share aspirations and destiny". He also paid tribute to delegates from the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and other countries taking part in the anniversary celebrations. On Saturday (30 December) President El Nimeiry had left Khartoum by train for Wadmedani where he toured research farms and opened a new television station.

SYNOPSIS: President El Nimeiry of the Sudan stood on top of one of the carriage of his Presidential train last Saturday so cheering crowds of supporters could see him clearly when he arrived at Wadmedani to tour an exhibition at the town's research farm and open a new television station.

With the President, as special guest, was Tanzanian Vice-President...Aboud Jumbe, who cut the official ribbon to open and exhibition at Wadmedani's farming research establishment. Large crowds followed the official party.

There were many specially-prepared exhibits for the President and his guest to examine in some detail. Sudan is encouraging research establishments in their efforts to promote better farming practices.

Later in the day the crowds moved on to Wadmedani's new television station where President El Nimeriy was about to perform the opening ceremony.

Accompanied again by Mr. Jumbe, the President cut the usual official ribbon before turning the television station's new equipment and facilities.

But it was at kassala, the capital of Sudan's Eastern Province, that President El Nimeiry drew the largest crowds when he arrived on Monday to take part in a mass rally marking the 17th anniversary of Sudan's independence. The Sudan had been under Anglo-Egyptian condominium rule until 1966.

The main anniversary celebrations were held at the Kassala Stadium where teams of girl gymnasts gave a formation display. President El Nimeiry told the rally that African freedom fighters were being trained in the Sudan. Liberation movement members, he said, were undergoing courses of military training, but he revealed no ??? tribute to neighbouring countries which shared Sudan's aspirations and destiny.
