  • Description

Michel Rocard, one of the candidates for French presidency, spent part of yesterday (20 May) signing copies of his new book in Paris.

Rocard is secretary of the P.S.U. -- the United Socialist Party. His book is about the P.S.U. -- 'And the Socialist Future of France'. Late yesterday afternoon he sat in the Political Science bookshop on Paris' Rue Saint Guillaume, and signed copies for a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, many of them students.

The P.S.U. was founded in 1960. It was a merger of three smaller groups, including dissidents from the communist party and radicals under M. Mendes France, P.S.U. politics are independent revolutionary and very left wing.

Though Rocard's candidacy is not considered a serious diversion from the central duel between Poher and Pompidou, it will be one obstacle in the way of a united Left-Wing front. Pierre Mendes France and Gaston Deferre, two of the leading candidates of the left, have teamed up for the campaign. But in a radio speech simultaneously broadcast over Europe One and Radio Monte Carlo. M. Rocard accused Deferre of aligning with the centre and refusing to unite the left and rely on the solidarity of the workers.
