Background: SOUTH AFRICA'S GARY PLAYER COASTED HOME TO ONE OF THE EASIEST WINS IN THE HISTORY OF THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AT ROYAL MELBOURNE ON NOVEMBER 2.

PLAYER'S FINAL ROUND OF 68 BROUGHT HIS TOTAL TO A SEVEN UNDER THE CARD 278.THIS EQUALLED THE AGGREGATE COURSE RECORD SET TEN YEARS AGO BY NORMAN VON NIDA OF SYDNEY.

SECOND WAS THE INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL BRUCE DEVLIN OF SYDNEY SEVEN STROKES BEHIND PLAYERS.THIRD PLACE WENT TO KEL NAGLE OF SYDNEY AND PETER THOMSON OF VICTORIA, WHO EACH RETURNED AN AGGREGATE 286.

A HIGHLIGHT OF THE ROUND WAS SYDNEY PROFESSIONAL JOHN DAVIS'S APPROACH AT THE EIGHTH.HE SANK THIS FROM 60-FEET WITH THE PIN STILL STANDING.

AT THE TWELFTH GREEN, VICTORIA'S PETER THOMSON LINED UP FOR A SUCCESSFUL PUTT.HE WENT ON TO RETURN A FOUR UNDER THE CARD OF 70.

BRUCE DEVLIN PLAYED A GOOD APPROACH SHOT AT THE 18TH...THE GALLERY SAW SOME CLASSIC GOLF, WITH PLENTY OF ACTION.

EARLIER IN THE DAY THE TITLE SEEMED LIKELY TO DEVELOP INTO A DUEL Between PLAYER AND NAGEL.NAGEL FINISHED HIS FINAL ROUND WITH A FOUR UNDER PAR 70.HE HAD FIVE CONSECUTIVE BIRDIES ON THE RUN HOME BUT BUNKERED AT THE LAST FOR A ONE OVER PAR 5.HIS SOUTH AFRICAN OPPONENT WAS TO TURN ON A DAZZLING DISPLAY THROUGHOUT THE FINAL ROUND OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
