  • Description

At least three people died after torrential rains which fell over the Rome area during the weekend.

A man aged 22, and his young finance, died when their care was buried by a mudslide at Monterotondo, north of the capital, and a 49-year-old woman, died when her car was swept into a canal by a landslide.

The river Tiber had risen by more than five meters (16 feet) in a few hours on Monday (16 February) as a result of the weekend rains.

Meteorological officials said that more than four centimetres 1.5 inches (4 centimetres) of rain had fallen on the city since Saturday. The figure is about the same as the average for the whole month.

Scum covered water lapped lower window ledges of buildings on Tiber island, in the centre of Rome and the makeshift homes of hundreds of shanty town dwellers in Rome's Fossa San Agnese area were flooded by the deluge.

Large areas of Italy were affected by rain and snow, causing road and rail chaos throughout the country.
