  • Description

KING MAHENDRA OF NEPAL HAS OFFICIALLY OPENED THE NEW 65 MILE (104 KM) ROAD LINKING KATMANDU, THE NEPALESE CAPITAL, WITH THE TIBETAN BORDER TOWN OF KODARI. THE ROAD WAS BUILT IN FOUR YEARS BY NEPAL AND THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AT A COST OF NEARLY GBP500,000 STERLING.

THE BUILDING OF THE KATMANDU-KODARI ROAD FOLLOWED THE COMPLETION OF A MUCH LONGER ROAD BETWEEN KODARI AND LHASSA, THE CAPITAL OF TIBET. THE NEXT STEP IS THE COMPLETION OF ROAD BETWEEN LHASSA AND PEKING, THE CAPITAL OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC.

THE KATMANDU-KODARI SECTION WAS OPENED BY KING MAHENDRA CUTTING A RIBBON ACROSS THE ROAD. ALSO PRESENT WERE THE KING OF NEPAL, THE CHINESE MINISTER OF FOREIGN TRADE, MR. LIN HAI YUN, AND A LARGE NUMBER OF CHINESE TECHNICIANS WHO HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE ROAD.

MR. YUN MADE A SPEECH BITTERLY CRITICISING THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION, BUT THE NEPALESE PRESENT DID NOT JOIN WITH THE CHINESE IN APPLAUDING HIS SPEECH. THE ROAD WAS BUILT AS A RESULT OF NEPAL'S DESIRE TO INCREASE TRADE WITH THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. AT THE PEAK OF ACTIVITY, 12,000 LABOURERS WERE EMPLOYED ON BUILDING THE ROAD.

THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC SENT MORE THAN 700 TECHNICIANS AND LABOURERS TO HELP IN THE CONSTRUCTION. IT ALSO SUPPLIED ALL CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT. THE BUILDING OF THE ROAD HAS BEEN BITTERLY CRITICISED IN INDIA, WHOSE GOVERNMENT FEARS IT MIGHT BE USED BY THE CHINESE AS S SUPPLY LINE FOR A FUTURE ATTACK ON INDIA.
