Background: The annual Highland Games were held in Edinburgh on Saturday (19 August). The competition combined traditional Scottish contests such as the throwing of the Scottish Hammer, and Scottish dancing with more traditional track and field events.
The British hammer throwing champion Howard Payne, who will be competing for Britain at the Olympics in Munich, took part in the Scottish hammer throw. He placed second in the competition with a throw of the wooden-handled hammer of 217 feet 19 inches. In the Olympics he will be competing with the more usual weight and chain variety of hammer.
Another Olympic competitor for Britain, Mary Peters, equalled the high-jump mark for these Games with a jump of 5 feet 10 inches.
