SATURDAY'S WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE BIRENDRA OF NEPAL AND HIS BRIDE, PRINCESS AISHAWARYA, CULMINATED WITH A MAGNIFICENT PROCESSION THROUGH THE STREETS OF KATMANDU TO THE ROYAL PALACE.

THE COUPLE RODE IN A STATE COACH DRAWN BY SEVEN HORSES AS THE CROWN PRINCE TOOK HIS BRIDE TO HER NEW HOME IN THE PALACE.

WEATHER CONDITIONS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE CEREMONIES. MANY NEPALESE FEARED THAT EARTH TREMORS THE DAY BEFORE THE WEDDING MIGHT BE BAD OMENS. BUT THE SUN HAD BROKEN THROUGH AS THE ROYAL COUPLE LEFT THE LION PALACE-WHERE THEY WERE MARRIED. THIS, AND SUBSEQUENT SHOWERS DURING THE PROCESSION, WAS REGARDED AS A GOOD OMEN.

FOR THE PROCESSION, OTHER MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY AND LEADING NEPALESE RODE THROUGH THE CITY ON SIX ELEPHANTS, WHILE A SEVENTH CARRIED THE SILVER HOWEDAH IN WHICH THE PRINCE HAD TRAVELLED TO THE WEDDING.

THE PROCESSION, WITH ITS BANDS, MASKED DANCERS AND BACKGROUND OF FIREWORKS, WAS WATCHED BY PRINCIPAL GUESTS AT THE WEDDING, WHO WAITED WITH NEPAL'S KING MAHENDRA AT THE PALACE TO GREET THE ROYAL COUPLE.

AMONG THE GUESTS WERE INDIA'S PRESIDENT GIRI AND HIS WIFE, THE KING AND QUEEN OF LAOS, PRINCE HITACHI AND PRINCESS HANAKO OF JAPAN, AND PRINCE WANGCHUK OF BHUTAN.
