Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad held four hours of discussions with the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation -- led by chairman Yasser Arafat -- in Damascus on Sunday (15 June). Mr. Khaled Al Fahoum, chairman of the Palestine National Council, was also present.

During the meeting President Assad reviewed the situation of Palestinians throughout the Middle East, and gave details of his recent talks with Jordan's King Hussein in Amman.

Syria and Jordan have just announced plans for the formation of a joint supreme command to promote political and military co-operation ... a move which observers consider may speed up a rapprochement between Jordan and the Palestinians. Relations have been strained since severe fighting between the two sides in 1970 and 1971.

The Syrian President's meeting with the Palestinian leaders came on the day when the first open hostilities between Israeli troops and Arab guerrillas for three months took place. Israeli aircraft raided suspected guerrilla bases in villages in southern Lebanon following a guerrilla raid on an Israeli farmhouse just south of the Lebanese border.
