Background: MRS. MINI BOESMAN, A DUTCH BALLOON COMMANDER, WAS DECLARED THE UNOFFICIAL WINNER OF A BALLOON RACE LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) HAVING COVERED A DISTANCE OF 81 MILES (130 KILOMETRES) WHEN LANDING NEAR GRONAU, AT THE DUTCH-GERMAN BORDER, AT SUNSET.

SHE WAS ONE OF SEVEN BALLOON COMMANDERS WHO TOOK OFF FROM UTRECHT YESTERDAY TO TAKE PART IN THE RACE FOR THE "TROPHEE DU BALLON LIBRE" ORGANISED BY ONLY LONG DISTANCE BALLOON EVENT IN THE WORLD, BEING THE SUCCESSOR TO THE PRE-WAR CHAMPION RACE FOR THE "COUPE GORDON BENNETT".

IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE THE JURY HAS CALCULATED THE FINAL RESULTS, THE ORGANISERS SAID. UNOFFICIALLY, THE GERMAN ALFRED ECKERT IS SECOND, HIS BALLOON HAVING COVERED A DISTANCE OF MORE THAN 75 MILES (120 KILOMETRES) -- HE LANDED IN THE GERMAN TOWN OF GRAES -- AND THE AMERICAN FRANCIS SHIELDS THIRD WITH A DISTANCE OF LESS THAN 75 MILES -- HE LANDED NEAR EIDERGEN, EASTERN HOLLAND.

THE DUTCHMAN BEN STEEMAN LANDED AT TOLDIJK NEAR HENGELO, WHILE FRENCHMAN CHARLES COLLFUS (THE 71-YEAR-OLD VETERAN'SD RECORDS SHOW MORE THAN 500 BALLOON FLIGHTS) LANDED IN A TREE AT WARNSVELD NEAR ZUTHPEN. ANTHONY SMITH OF BRITAIN LANDED AT HAARLO AND THE BELGIAN ALBERT BEN BEMDEN LANDED NEAR EDE, HAVING USED HIS HANDICAP BALLAST. THE BELGIAN WAS DISQUALIFIED.

THE WINNER'S TROPHY FOR YESTERDAY'S RACE WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE NEXT BALLOON CONTEST IN BELGIUM IN SEPTEMBER.
